You must ideally get a beehive that has five supers. The supers are a very important part of the beehive because they are where the bees will be storing their honey. Check that all the five supers are placed between the bottom of the beehive and its cover. Young honeybees will also be breed in the supers, apart from the storage of honey. When the hive starts buzzing with activity, each of these frames will show nine to ten frames. You can make your choice from among them. The benefit of using a deep super is that you will have to buy foundation of a single size. But you must be ready for the weight – when full, a deep super can weight a hundred pounds. You will have to make sure you place your beehive someplace where the surface is even, or else your beehive may topple over in strong breeze. Keep it in a place where no one else or your pets can disturb it. If you want to arrange the frames in an equidistant manner while they are inside the super, you will need a spacer.
The device you will now need is a smoker. The purpose of the smoker is to drive the bees out, it comes in handy when you want to do some honey harvesting. The design of the smoker is actually quite minimal. A smoker contains only three parts – a funnel, a chamber where combustion takes place and bellows. Many beekeepers claim that old, clean burlap is the best material to use in the smoker because burlap is easy to ignite and smolders and smokes. Other beekeepers prefer to use dried corn cobs. At the same time, the smoke can be taken into the beehive using the funnel.
Another tool you will need is a metal hive tool. You will find this tool important when you have to open the beehive, remove its different comportment and simply to maintain complete cleanliness of the hive. The use of the bee brush is to remove the bees from the way when the frames need to be examined.
